Jaw and Cheek Retargeting

With the release of Analyzer 2.6 and Retargeter 4.6, the ability to track and retarget the Jaw and Cheeks separately from the default groups has been added. Retargeting the Jaw and Cheeks separately adds another layer of user control to the retargeting process and allows for the animator to have more granular control over the different areas of the face. To utilize this feature, you must have tracked the Jaw and Cheeks in Analyzer. If you are unfamiliar with how to do so, please see this article.

*Note - Jaw and Cheek tracking is an advanced feature of Analyzer 2.6/Retargeter 4.6. Please understand the basics of the Retargeter workflow (including Character Setup and Expression Set Creation) before attempting to track and retarget these groups.

 

Character Setup with Jaw and Cheeks

*Please familiarize yourself with the basic Character Setup process before proceeding. More information on Character Setup in Retargeter can be found here: Character Setup Walkthrough

The first step in adding the Jaw and Cheeks groups is creating a new character setup file. Open the Character Setup dialog in Retargeter and create a new Character Setup file.

As using the Jaw and Cheeks groups is an advanced feature, it requires the user to add those groups manually. Click the "New..." button in the Rig Groups.jaw_RT.jpg

Name your new group. In the "Analysis Data File" dropdown menu, there will not be a selection for Jaw or Cheeks parameters. This is expected and we will manually add them in the next step. For now, you can leave this section as the default. Click 'OK' and then repeat the process for the other pose group (if applicable).

Save your file using the File menu. Now navigate to your newly created character setup xml and open it with a text editor. Once it is open, search for the name of one of the pose groups that you've just created. It should look like the following:

  <Component>
    <Name>Cheeks</Name>
    <ParameterFile>Head_Params</ParameterFile>
    </Component>

In the "ParameterFile" field, we're going to change the name of the parameter data group. The Jaw and Cheeks parameter files are called Jaw_Params and Cheeks_Params respectively. It is important to get the names correct as Retargeter will not read the data if the names are misspelled. In our example here, the new section will look like this:

    <Component>
<Name>Cheeks</Name> <ParameterFile>Cheeks_Params</ParameterFile> </Component>

Repeat this process for the other pose group (if applicable) and save your xml. Go back to the Character Setup dialog in Retargeter and load your newly saved xml from the File menu. Your Rig Groups should now look like this:

Note how the names under "Analysis Data" are now correct for the Cheeks and Jaw groups.

 

Control Setup and Expression Set creation

Setting up the rig controls is for the Jaws and Cheeks is done in exactly the same manner as normal. Be sure to only add the appropriate rig controls for the given pose group and remember to set the default and minimum/maximum values as you normally would.

If you're using AutoSolve, then you also need to create an Expression Set. Again, this is exactly the same as creating one without Jaw and Cheeks. You can find more information about creating Expression Sets here: Expression Sets walkthrough

 

Retargeting/AutoSolving

As with control setup and Expression Set creation, Retargeting/AutoSolving with the new groups is the same as any other group. Whenever you retarget your new groups, the information will come from the associated tracking and you can AutoSolve or create poses on the appropriate controls in the same manner that you would the Eyes, Mouth, and Brows.
